Every one of us has been asked, “What can I do to increase the dollar amount on my bridge card?” at some point while assisting clients. While there are several other programs that can help to stretch the card amount, such as Double up Food Bucks or Senior Project Fresh, there is also the potential for more money for some. Medical expenses are often overlooked as an item to submit to MDHHS upon application, renewal, or whenever they arise.

To help make it easier to remember and understand, here is a list of the medical expenses that MDHHS allows for the medical deduction and what verifications are required for them:

  • Medical and dental care, including psychotherapy and rehabilitation services, that is provided by a licensed practitioner authorized by State Law or another qualified health professional
  • Hospitalization or nursing care
  • Prescription drugs and postage for mail-ordered prescriptions
  • Costs of medical supplies, sickroom equipment (including rental), or other prescribed medical equipment [Examples: Colostomy bag, bedpan, walker)
  • Over-the-counter medication and other health-related supplies when recommended by a licensed health professional [Examples: insulin, aspirin, sterile gauze, incontinent supplies]
  • Premiums for health and hospitalization policies
  • Medicare premiums
  • Dentures, hearing aids, and prosthetics
  • Service animal
  • Eyeglasses that are prescribed by an ophthalmologist
  • Costs of transportation and/or lodging for medical treatments/services
  • Costs of hiring an individual to help around the house (home health aide, housekeeper, child care provider, etc.)

Acceptable Verification Sources:

  • Copies of current bills/written statements from the provider that show how the amounts that are paid, or will be paid, by insurance, Medicare, or Medicaid
  • Insurance/Medicare/Medicaid statements that show how much the insurer has paid or how much they will pay
  • Written statements from a licensed health professional that states why certain things are needed
  • Receipts and/or printouts to show how much was paid for an item (dog food, over-the-counter medications, medical supplies, etc.)
