Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) has announced some changes that could benefit those who have heating expenses built into their rental expense and receive SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program). The State will release $20.01 in LIHEAP (Low Income Home Energy Assistance Payments) to those not already eligible for the Home Heating Credit or other LIHEAP assistance. As a result, these individuals will see an increased Housing Standard Utility Allowance of $526 toward their SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) deductions. This could mean an increase in their monthly SNAP benefits. The following is the timeline for these changes:
- July 6th: Letters sent to those eligible, making them aware of LIHEAP payment and possible increase in SNAP benefit.
- July 29th: $20.01 from LIHEAP will be available on Bridge cards for those eligible.
- August: Eligible clients will possibly see an increase to their SNAP benefits.
